Popcorn is defined as little kernels that metamorphose into big fluffy balls of corn that taste great with butter and salt. The oldest known popcorn to man was found in the bottom of a refuse pile in a Bat cave in New Mexico. The kernels were still able to be popped even though they are dated as being 5,600 years old.

The Aztecs cooked their popcorn by mixing the kernels into the sand near a hot fire. They actually used the popped kernels as decorations and food. It was rumored that the spirits inside of the kernels made them pop.

Popcorn is today still a cheap treat and it was used quite often and commonly in World War II and during the great depression. It’s a treat that many families make often today because the economy is in such a steep decline. It’s cheap, salty, buttery and good. What more could you ask for?

Popcorn used to be grown in peoples gardens and didn’t become available for commercial sale until the 1990’s. Today it is used in movie theatres, stores and just about everywhere else that you can imagine.

Popcorn has run the gamut from being popped in hot sand in front of a fire, to being popped on a stove in a pan and who can forget the days of popping it over a campfire. Then of course we can’t forget the tin pans with popcorn in them that you sit on top of the stove and it rises as the corn pops. There is every brand from Orville Redenbacher to Act I to choose from.

These days you can use home popcorn makers or just pop a bag in the microwave and push the popcorn button. In fact the very first microwave was tested by popping popcorn. You can also if you are feeling homesick for the old days throw some kernels into the nostalgia popcorn maker and pop it that way.

No matter how you decide to pop your popcorn you can be guaranteed that somewhere in the world someone is enjoyed this fluffy, buttery, salty treat all of the time.
